Coimbatore Doctor Duped of Rs 39.74 Lakhs by Impostors Posing as CBI Officers

In Coimbatore's Saibaba Colony, Dr. Chandrasekhar, a 70-year-old orthopedic specialist, was scammed out of Rs 39.74 Lakhs by individuals impersonating CBI officers, claiming involvement in a drug parcel case.

Coimbatore: Dr. Chandrasekhar, an orthopedic specialist residing in an apartment in Saibaba Colony, became the victim of a sophisticated scam involving individuals posing as CBI officers.

The 70-year-old doctor received a call from someone claiming to be speaking from Delhi, informing him about a suspicious parcel in his name containing illegal substances. Subsequently, another impersonator contacted him, demanding his immediate presence in Delhi for clarification regarding the alleged drug parcel under the threat of arrest.

Alarmed and convinced by the authority of the callers, Dr. Chandrasekhar was coerced into believing that his innocence could be proven only by transferring Rs 39,74,025 to a specified bank account. Assured that the amount would be refunded once his innocence was established, he complied. However, after a significant delay and no refund, Dr. Chandrasekhar contacted the actual CBI office in Delhi, only to discover he had been deceived.

Realizing the scam, Dr. Chandrasekhar filed a complaint with the Coimbatore City Cyber Crime Police on June 6. The police are currently investigating the matter, tracing the fraudulent calls and the bank account involved in the scam.
