Elderly Woman Injured in Wild Elephant Attack Near Semmedu, Coimbatore

Late night on June 25, in Semmedu, Coimbatore, Rukkumani, a 70-year-old resident, was attacked by a wild elephant near her home while checking on a noise by her neighbor's door.


Coimbatore: In a terrifying incident, a 70-year-old woman, identified as Rukkumani, was severely injured in a wild elephant attack near Semmedu, Coimbatore. Rukkumani ventured out of her house late at night after hearing noises resembling someone knocking at the door of her neighbor, Eeswari.

Upon opening the door, she discovered the noises were coming from an elephant that had broken into Eeswari's house and was feeding on the rice. Due to the darkness, Rukkumani didn't initially notice the elephant until she approached the source of the noise. As she came closer, she realized an elephant was present and attempted to escape. However, the elephant quickly attacked her with its trunk and flung her into a nearby drain.

Eeswari, witnessing the scenario, stayed inside her house to avoid the rampaging elephant. Eventually, the elephant moved away from the area. Following the departure of the elephant, Eeswari and nearby residents came to Rukkumani's aid and promptly called for an emergency service using the 108 ambulance service. Rukkumani was taken to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for medical treatment.

She sustained serious injuries to her head and chest and is currently receiving intensive care at the hospital. Local wildlife authorities have been alerted to increase surveillance and safety measures in the area to prevent further such incidents.
