Siruvani Dam Water Level Rises to 30 Feet

Recent rains in Western Ghats have increased Siruvani Dam's water level from 26 to 30 feet. The dam, crucial for Coimbatore's water supply, is now receiving steady inflow due to continued rainfall.

Coimbatore: The Siruvani Dam, one of Coimbatore's primary water sources, has seen a significant rise in its water level, reaching 30 feet as of July 13. Located in the Western Ghats of Palakkad district in Kerala, the dam has a total storage capacity of 50 feet.

At the beginning of this year, due to insufficient rainfall, the water level stood at a mere 26 feet. However, recent rains in the Western Ghats have led to a gradual increase in the dam's water level. On July 8, the dam area received 55 mm of rainfall, while the foothills recorded 12 mm, pushing the water level to 28 feet.

As of 8:00 AM on July 13, the dam area received 73 mm of rainfall, and the foothills recorded 17 mm. This additional inflow has further raised the water level to 30 feet. Currently, 58.8 million liters of water are being drawn daily from the dam for drinking water purposes.

With continuous rainfall in the Western Ghats, there is a high probability that the dam's water level will continue to rise in the coming days. This increase in water level brings relief to Coimbatore residents, as it ensures a more stable water supply for the near future.

The Siruvani Dam plays a crucial role in meeting the water needs of Coimbatore city. The recent rise in water level is a positive development, especially considering the challenges faced earlier in the year due to insufficient rainfall. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for sustained rainfall to further improve the dam's storage levels.
