On the busy, congested stretch of Gokhale Street in Ramnagar road users find it difficult to move around. Even the pedestrians have a tough time negotiating the stretch as the Coimbatore Corporation has placed a bin on the street.
The bin has eaten away road space and led to congestion notwithstanding the fact that the street is one-way where vehicles could move only from north to south.
A few km away on the Puliakulam Main Road, the corporation had placed a bin closer to the median. And, on Nanjundapuram Road, the corporation has placed bins on both sides of the road, hindering the free flow of vehicles.
Road users say that while they fully well understand that the corporation has to do its job of waste collection, it would do well to place the bins in such a way that they don’t hinder the movement of vehicles or pedestrians.
The protruding handles of the bins hit motorists who fall of vehicles to suffer accidents, they say and want the corporation to place the bins off the roads.
Traffic Police officials say that there have been occasions where they had asked the civic body officials to push the bins off the roads.
The corporation officials say that the bins placed on the road are of different sizes and those need to be loaded on the vehicles using the hydraulic jack. The men operating the vehicles, therefore, need space to park the vehicles in such a way that they have manoeuvring space to load and unload the bins.
Most often they ensure that the bins are replaced in the exact spot but then problems do crop up because the conservancy workers make four or five trips a day – meaning, they clear eight to 10 bins a day.
The officials say there are also problems in placing the bins – the first is that not all residents or traders welcome bins near their premises. Therefore, the corporation has to find space where the residents do not object.
They will also have to make it convenient for workers who operate push carts. They will have to bins in such a way that the push cart operators do not push around the carts for long to empty those.
Given the limitations, the corporation was all doing all it can to ensure that the bins do not inconvenience vehicle users. If there is any, the civic body will be looking into, they promise.
The corporation has over 1,000 bins the city and is planning to place more.
