Tirupur district court denies bail to Kowsalya's parents

The Principal District Judge (PDJ) court in Tirupur has denied bail to Kowsalya's parents on Monday. The parents filed a bail petition before the court on Saturday, as the Tirupur rural police had completed their investigation. However, the prosecution counsel objected the bail petition claiming that the parents would tamper with evidences if they are released on bail.

Chinnasamy, 44 and Annalakshmi, 38, from Palani in Dindigul district, are under judicial custody for murdering dalit youth V Shankar, 22, in full public view at Udumalpet on March 13 for marrying their daughter Kowsalya, 19, eight months ago. Kowsalya's parents filed bail petition before the PDJ court on Saturday and the petition came up for hearing on Monday.

The couple stated in their petition that the police had completed their investigation. Thus, they hoped to be granted bail. However, special public prosecutor S Roopan argued that Kowsalya and her husband Shankar's family have been receiving several threats. They are now under police protection. Releasing the duo on bail would be against their interests, argued the public prosecutor.

He also argued that as many as 11 people were arrested in connection with the case and one more person is absconding till now. So, the court should not grant bail to the couple. Judge Alamelu Nataraj heard the arguments of both sides and dismissed the bail petition. The same court dismissed the bail petition of Kowsalya's maternal uncle Panithurai, 49, on Saturday.

Eight month ago, dalit youth Shankar married Kowsalya and they were residing at Kumaralingam village near Udumalpet. On March 13, the couple was returning to the Udumalpet bus stand after a round of shopping. A five member gang waylaid and brutally attacked them with sickles in the full public view. Shankar died in a pool of blood and Kowsalya was in hospital for more than 20 days.
