Temporary medians on city roads pose traffic hurdle

Police allege delay in sanction of funds for traffic improvement works.

Shortage of concrete medians and metal barricades has forced the city police to go in for small concrete blocks to divide the lanes on Nanjappa Road and a section of Sathy Road.

But it seems to be a bad idea, as these temporary medians do not serve the purpose.

The cement blocks, that are not plastered, get displaced after motorists ram into them. These displaced blocks, apart from causing inconvenience, reduce motorable space and are a potential danger to motorists.

Traffic police personnel said that there are around 1,900 metal barricades that are used for diving roads and traffic diversions.

Admitting that they are running short of barricades, they said that concrete blocks are placed on roads where they are unable to mobilise barricades or bigger concrete medians.

Such temporary medians were replaced with moderately bigger concrete ones near KG Theatre with the help of sponsors.

The public feel that the cement blocks should be plastered to avert accidents.

Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) R. Sivakumar said that they have written to the corporation to sanction funds from the traffic improvement funds for installing concrete medians and to carry out other traffic improvement works. “But there is delay in funds getting sanctioned,” Mr. Sivakumar added.
