SIHS Colony residents stage black flag protest

Agitated with the Coimbatore Corporation for not providing basic facilities in their area, residents of the SIHS Colony near Singanallur hoisted black flag in nearly 300 houses in Coimbatore on Sunday.

Demanding basic facilities, the residents also stormed the streets in the vicinity.  They were pacified only after officials from Coimbatore Corporation assured them that their queries would be addressed within a week.

According to Dheivendran, one of the residents of the area, around 500 families are living in the areas adjoining Srinivasan Nagar, Surya Nagar, Kannan Nagar, Kamatchi Nagar, Senthil Nagar and Sivalingapuram, all in the SIHS Colony.

“Though we have been living here for more than 30 years, our area has not received any basic facilities including roads, drainage, lights, toilets and other facilities,” he alleged.

He further claimed that no development project has come to the area under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme.

“People in our area are afraid of coming out at night as there are no lights and roads. Sanitation is also a huge problem for us,” said another resident.

Claiming to have filed many petitions with the District Administration regarding the issue, the residents also said that the there had been no response.

Demanding an immediate hearing to their plea, they hoisted black flags atop more than 300 houses in the area and residents including more than 500 women stormed the streets at Surya Nagar and staged a demonstration.

A team headed by the Assistant Commissioner of the zone reached the spot and tried to pacify the crowd. However, the residents were relentless and moved out only after the officials assured that roads would be laid within three days.

Meanwhile, the residents also claimed that they would stage a hunger strike if the Corporation did not lay roads within the said time.
