High court to hear all building cases at one go on July 10

Now that the issue of unauthorised constructions of T Nagar has again hit the headlines for all wrong reasons, Madras high court has decided to club all pending cases related to unauthorised buildings and hear them on July 10.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, before which social activist Traffic Ramaswamy made a mention on Monday and highlighted the fact that officials and the minister concerned had blamed the issue on pending court cases, made the monitoring committee also a party to the case.

Significantly, among the cases to be taken up for hearing would be the batch of cases involving top textile showrooms like Pothy's, Saravana Stores and Chennai Silks, that were disposed by another bench on February 20 this year. The first bench has directed the registry to place before it the records pertaining to two PILs filed by Kannan Balachandran. The PILs were disposed of by the other bench on February 20, after recording an undertaking given by the housing secretary of Tamil Nadu that the rules and guidelines for effective implementation of Section 113-C of Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act, would be notified in two months.

The bench also impleaded the monitoring committee chairman, who is housing secretary, and directed the registry to post all similar matters for hearing on July 10.

Earlier, Traffic Ramaswamy mentioned the matter and said that it was the negligence and failure of the officials concerned to take action on violators of illegal constructors which resulted in the Chennai Silks building fire on May 31. Besides seeking action against the owners of the building, he wanted the transfer of state housing secretary who was continuing in the same post for more than five years now.
