A plastic godown was gutted completely on Podanur Road here early on Tuesday morning. Two fire tenders and 30 firemen were pressed into service and they doused the fire after four hours. The godown owner claimed that one of his business rivals might have been involved in the sabotage.
S Hussain Sherif, 65, and his son H Nawas Sherif, 29, were running the plastic godown on a rented land on Podanur road near Karumbukkadai. Hussain Sherif started the business more than 20 years ago in Coimbatore and he used to send the collected waste plastic to Chennai by trucks.
He built the godown eight years ago. Four youths from Bihar were working in the godown and they used to collect plastic waste from various industrial sectors in Coimbatore and neighbouring districts.
"We dumped the collected plastic waste and used to send them to New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai," said Nawas Sherif.
The four workers quit their job last week and told Nawas that they planned to return to their home town. On Monday around 9 pm, Nawas had locked the godown and returned home.
