Old closed-circuit television cameras to be put to use

With new high resolution Internet Protocol (IP) cameras being fitted at traffic signals to bring the city under surveillance of the third eye from the modern control room of the city police, the police are planning to put to use the older ones, which were removed from the signals.

In 2010, 184 CCTV cameras were fitted at nearly 50 traffic signals across the city. This was for betterment of security for the World Classical Tamil Conference, held here that year. While funds were allotted for maintain those cameras, the system failed over the years due to poor maintenance.

In 2014, only 14 of those cameras were working. The rest were not in working condition as the wires connecting them were damaged in most cases.

Police sources said that even after repair these cameras cannot be used for the updated monitoring system that the city police are now working on. In the last week of March, replacement of old cameras with modern IP cameras began.

The old cameras were taken to the city police commissioner’s office. City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj said that they have around 130 such old cameras.

“These cameras will be checked and those in working condition will be used for surveillance purpose at vital pockets where public movement is high,” he said on Friday.
