A day of fun, awareness and a lot more on NSR Road

There was unbridled joy among the participants on the stretch as an artist sat portrait sketching and drawing the caricatures.

Car-Free Sundays, which has completed eight weeks, continued to bring people together to participate in activities that promote a healthy and happy lifestyle and also created awareness on the right to vote and environment conservation.

At about 6.40 on Sunday morning, the 800 metre stretch of the NSR Road was a complete celebration, brimming with people of all age groups grooving to famous dance numbers.

An aerobic session by the Beethoven Body Zeal Fitness Studio, a dance performance by Ranjith School of Dance highlighting voter awareness, and a fusion dance by a student of CMS College got the crowd charged with energy. Karaoke singing by the Mohan Band spread melody and harmony among the crowd.

This week, Roots Industries launched two projects to create awareness in protecting the environment at Car-Free Sundays: a cycle rally with over 100 people to promote a healthy and pollution-free lifestyle, and distribution of around 300 free saplings to encourage planting of trees and prevention of global warming.

“I am so happy that I have my own plant now,” beamed a little girl who was dancing away with a sapling in her hand.

According to Kavidasan, Director (HR), Roots, the company started the project two years ago to create awareness among its employees and the public on the need to be environment-friendly.

As part of its initiative, Roots has distributed bicycles at 50 per cent cost.

There was unbridled joy among the participants on the stretch as an artist sat portrait sketching and drawing the caricatures.

Be it a game of snakes and ladder, football, shuttle or painting on the road the event is all encompassing.

The free buttermilk distributed by Jagannath Textiles kept the crowd fresh and hydrated.

The initiative by The Hindu is in association with Coimbatore Corporation and City Traffic Police. Mark 1 Events is the Event Manager and Radio City is the Radio partner.

The three hour-long event recorded by Radio City will be aired on Friday as a prelude for the next Sunday and to listen to the capsule of the Car- Free Sunday just tune into 91.1.

Those interested in taking part and those who want to have events at Car- Free Sundays can contact Madhan (9715063000) of Mark 1 Events.
