City women raise funds to clean up the Noyyal

City women got busy with spring cleaning this season, identifying items they no longer used or needed, which they donated towards a sale organised to raise funds for restoration of the Noyyal.

From toy cars to real cars, electrical home appliances, antiques, photo frames and furniture, everything under the sun was put up for sale at Mani Higher Secondary School on Sunday. The proceeds from this sale would be used for cleaning up canals of the Noyyal.

"When we visited the Noyyal last year, we were disturbed to see how it was clogged with plastic and other waste. We decided to do something, but had no funds. So, we worked out a plan and from this January we began cleaning up our homes. We also contacted several vendors to find out if they would put up old products on sale," said Prachi Kikani, president, Inner Wheel Club of Coimbatore.

Members from other NGOs also extended their support to the sale by contributing products and volunteering on the day of the sale. Sumithra Shetty, a volunteer from Inner Wheel Club, said people's response to the jumbo sale was overwhelming. "We began the sale at 7.30am and by 10am almost 75% of the products were sold," she said.

One customer bought books for 7000, while an old two-wheeler fetched 2,000. Any items remaining after 6pm would be sold to scrap dealers and others who purchase second hand products. We hope to make at least 3-4lakhs from this sale," said Kikani Prachi.

Neena Bijoy, a buyer, said she was extremely happy with the sale. "I purchased a suit case, a pair of shoes, dresses and hand bags. The rates were reasonable and affordable. The quality of the products was also good. The icing on the cake is that all my money will go towards charity," she said.

Another customer, Sashi of Peelamedu, said she was happy to be at the sale.

"We know that the proceeds would be used to restore a river that is dear to all of us. So, I decided to come. I have purchased several items and I am very happy," she said.
