Thinking outside the box to beat the heat

The scorching sun has forced two-wheeler riders in the city to try out innovative solutions: attaching umbrellas to their vehicles to beat the heat. Priced between Rs. 1,800 and Rs. 2,200, the umbrellas come in different colours and models for motorbikes and scooters.

M. Ghulam Rasool of P&T Colony, who is promoting the product in the city, said the umbrellas are imported from Taiwan. “The product came to the city only two weeks ago. There are 10 sub dealers in the city, who fit the product on around 30 two-wheelers a day. It is getting increasingly popular,” he said.

Rasool and his friend A. Mohammed Sherief saw the product on WhatsApp and started marketing it here.

They claim that the umbrella can be removed when not needed.

Since they are wind-resistant, the vehicles can speed up to 60 km an hour. “The target audience includes marketing executives, aged persons and women,” Mr. Rasool said.

But the umbrella is slightly bigger than the two-wheeler. It might disturb other road users, feel some who tried it out. The promoters, however, said the size of the umbrella cannot be reduced as it would affect its aerodynamics.
