Metro may increase visitors to Lalbagh flower show

The 206th Independence Day Flower Show - from August 4 to 15 - could draw more visitors than previous years, thanks to Namma Metro. Officials of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden expect the presence of Lalbagh metro station to take the number of visitors up from the average four lakh to five lakh.

Suitable arrangements have been made. “To help people alighting at Lalbagh station, the West Gate entrance will have additional counters. All four gates will have swipe card machines for easy ticketing,” said P.C. Ray, Commissioner, Department of Horticulture, at a press conference on Wednesday.

Celebrating Kuvempu

This year’s event will be celebrating Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, better known as Kuvempu, who brought the glory to Karnataka 50 years ago when he was honoured with the Jnanpith award. The show will have exhibits of replicas of his house at Kuppalli in Shivamogga district and the neighbourhood hill ‘Kavishaila’ that served as a source of inspiration to the poet-laureate.

“We will use nearly 3.5 lakh Dutch roses, along with select flowers grown on the outskirts of Bengaluru, for the two exhibits,” said M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director, Horticulture, Parks and Gardens.

Visitors can look forward to a huge photo gallery with notes, the lyrics of Naada Geethe, Raitha Geethe, and his Vishwa Manava Sandesha. The Glass House will have a replica of Kuvempu’s house decorated with red, yellow and white roses apart from white and yellow coronation flowers, and orchids and leaves of several shades of green. The arrangement will have to be changed thrice to keep it fresh and will eventually use 10.5 lakh flowers. Nearly 100 persons skilled in metal work and floral arrangement will be employed.

“This time, a mini-Malnad will be created, complete with a replica of the Jog Falls. There will be talks and discussions on major works of Kuvempu every day. For the first time, a huge musical stage will be set up. Some of his plays will be enacted at the Jawa Fig tree area. Depiction of Kuvempu’s fictional character Poovamma, scenes from Kanooru Heggadathi, Maleyalli Madhumagalu, Ramayana Darshanam will be enacted on all the days,” Mr. Jagadeesh said.

The Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Pratishtana will sell books authored by Kuvempu at discounted prices.

Arrangements for visitors

Nearly 500 police personnel and 100 CCTVs will be deployed. A fire brigade vehicle would be on stand-by. A mini medical centre would be set up. Ambulances would be posted. Anti-bee and snake bite shots would be available for emergency.

‘Implement Kannada’

Officials of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) visited Lalbagh on Wednesday and directed removal of trilingual boards in some places. They wanted some information boards to be made bilingual, where only English has been used. “We have asked them to make Kannada the default language on their website,” said S.G. Siddaramaiah, Chairman, KDA.
