Aspirational young seek more information

The Election Commission’s efforts to encourage young people to vote in the assembly elections has motivated first time voters.

Yet, these voters look out for more platforms that give credible information and details about candidates, parties and election manifestos.

For instance, 24-year-old Ravishankar, who resides at Gandhipuram, says: “I use the preferences of my family as a base for my own choice.”

Family is the entry point for political decisions for many youngsters. Being completely new to election procedures, the most reliable source of information for them comes from the family.

Opt for NOTA

There are some others who are in search of reliable information. “I don’t know which manifesto to trust, which source is reliable and which is manipulated. With few choices on these issues, many might opt for NOTA,” says a student of a private arts college in the city.

“Government record should be available on a public platform with details on the history of parties and candidates, so that we can make an informed choice,” says Akila Murali, a third year student of a private engineering college.
