Brick kiln owner sentenced, fined

The owner of a brick kiln on Thadagam Road has been levied Rs. 70,000 penalty and sentenced to undergo one year imprisonment by the Chief Judicial Magistrate for failing to provide safe working conditions at the unit.

According to an official of the Department of Industrial Safety and Health, a 22-year-old north Indian worker, who was employed at the brick kiln, was killed and a 21-year-old worker injured in an accident at the unit in 2014.

Action

Deputy Director of the department Vimala took legal action against the unit for having unsafe working conditions at the time of the accident.

In a recent judgement, the brick kiln owner was convicted and was asked to pay a penalty of Rs. 70,000 and undergo one year imprisonment.
