Road caves in leading to war of words between AIADMK and DMK

A stretch of the Kannapiran Mill Road that branches off Sowripalayam Road sank on Monday. A lorry that went there to dump earth fell off its sides near the damaged spot and the road damage led to a blame game between the AIADMK and DMK.

The road sank right in the middle, above the path of the underground drainage line for over 20 feet. DMK members who were campaigning saw the damage and staged an impromptu protest.

DMK ward secretary for the area R. Cheralathan said that he had been complaining of poor quality in the construction of underground sewer line in the area. After laying the sewer line, the contract company has not packed the earth and poured concrete mixture to stabilise the surface. The Corporation, too, has failed in supervising the work. The result is that the road sunk right above the UGD pipeline.

Ward 56 Councillor D. Lakshmi Ilanselvi, who was campaigning for her husband and party candidate N. Karthik, said that the road surface had been gradually developing cracks and sinking. Monday’s caving in was not a sudden development.

Even as the DMK men were protesting along with a few locals, the media and Corporation officials went to the spot. Soon thereafter, a lorry laden with earth went there to fill the cavity but as the driver lost control of the vehicle, it fell of its sides.

As efforts were on to get the vehicle on its wheels, the area Councillor (Ward 66) S. Thamarai Selvi went there and this resulted in a war of words. One blamed the other for bad work and resulted in trading charges.
