A constituency in need of basic facilities: Singanallur

In an urban area, that is well-connected, has a mix of residential and commercial developments, and a good number of educational institutions, basic facilities will have to be the priority for the candidate who gets elected as the next MLA.

Singanallur Assembly constituency is one of the oldest segments in the city and had an AIADMK MLA for the last 10 years.

Drinking water, power supply, roads and street lights are the basic requirements of people of this area. While power supply has improved, the other three are found wanting. “We used to receive drinking water once in four days. Then it was once a week. For the last one year, it is once in 10 days,” says Radhakrishnan, a resident of Peelamedu.

“The roads are in a bad shape. Taxes are high and there are bridges that are yet to be completed,” he says.

Another resident of GV Residency points out that the underground drainage work has not been completed in many areas. The roads have not been re-laid in the last five years. And, works that were taken up are of poor quality. Even small issues that affect the daily life of a resident have not been attended to.

For instance, at the junction where the road from Rajiv Gandhi Nagar joins Trichy Road, traffic snarls are common.

A signal there or having one-way in an alternative road would help the road users. Even these have not been attended to.

Though the issues are mostly related to the Corporation or the local governmental agencies, the MLA should voice his support and ensure that the required efforts are taken. “We need an MLA who is approachable and who is easily accessible to the public of the constituency,” says the resident.

Kavundampalayam, Coimbatore North, and Singanallur have the most number of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises in the city. Singanallur constituency is said to have over 8,000 micro units. “The unit owners and their families are a deciding factor in the elections,” says one of them.

Most of these units are located in residential areas and one of the long-pending demands of the micro and cottage enterprises is an exclusive industrial estate to which these units can shift to, says S. Ravikumar, president of Coimbatore and Tirupur District Micro and Cottage Entrepreneurs Association. “We want an MLA who will facilitate creation of such an infrastructure,” he says.

As many other Assembly constituencies, Singanallur will also see multi-cornered contest this year including candidates from the DMK, AIADMK, PMK, BJP, and MDMK.

“The DMK and AIADMK have been in power in the State alternatively for the last 50 years. People want change and we are asking them to give us a chance. Be it road over bridges, water supply, hygiene, or needs of industries, as an MLA I will do my best to address these requirements,” says A. Arjun Raj, the MDMK candidate.
