41-year-old lifeterm convict tops prisoners in district with 944 marks

Out of the 15 prisoners who wrote the Class 12 board exams from Coimbatore central prison, 13 have passed. One of the life convicts, 41-year-old, S Bhaskaran, has scored 944 marks, topping the prisoners who took the exam in the district.

The second and third toppers were the bomb blast convicts. Mohammed Aafiq alias Azad Hussain scored 891 while, the third rank was bagged by Santh Mohammed who scored 886 marks.

The results day was very special for J Omairaj, not only because it's his birthday. He has bagged the second spot in the state among prisoners, scoring 1052 marks.

A senior prison official said that he was extremely happy to have got such good results on his birthday. He's a life convict at the Trichy central prison. The other state first and third rank toppers are, B Papanasam who scored 1084 and Abdul Kader, who scored 1048.

Totally, 103 prisoners from the state wrote the exams and 94 of them passed. Two did not attend and 7 failed. Cuddalore, Vellore all women prison and Madurai central prisons acheived a 100 percent pass percentage.

Sakthivel, the Coimbatore central prison teacher, said that the prisoners were very dedicated and worked hard. "All the books were supplied by the government and many sponsors helped us buy guides and other stationery material. While the prisoners studied in the morning from 9am to noon, they worked in the evening. I taught them English and other subjects. Many specialized subject teachers were brought from outside to teach them economics, commerce and accounts," said Sakthivel.

He said the prisoners were keen to pursue their education and wanted to join UG courses after this.
