Residents threaten agitation over recreation club - bar issue

Residents of Sultanpettai hamlet, under Mangalam village, have threatened to launch a series of agitations if the authorities concerned did not take steps to remove a bar functioning on a recreation club premises situated in the locality.

They cited the proximity of the bar to the residential areas and a school as the reason to substantiate the demand for its shifting.

On Monday, a section of dwellers from the hamlet petitioned Collector S. Jayandhi and pointed out to the assurance given by the revenue officials that the bar would be closed immediately after the polling of votes in the Assembly elections was over.

“It is now one week since the polling was over and the officials at the lower rungs of the administration are dilly-dallying with the promises of removing the bar from the locality.

“When we conducted demonstrations and road blockade agitations as soon as the bar was opened two months back, the revenue officials at taluk level told us on each occasion that the bar will be closed shortly. Since the pressure mounted on them, the officials gave a final word that the bar would be closed soon after the polling ended”, pointed out R. Kaliappan, owner of a power loom job working unit who resides in the locality.

The residents said that the district administration had assured to look into their grievances on its merit.
