‘Z’ shape barricades to reduce accidents on Avinashi Road

To bring down accidents near SITRA Junction on Avinashi Road, the city traffic police have placed barricades in z shape - three big barricades in the shape of the letter Z - to slow down vehicles and save lives of those crossing that busy road. Barricades were placed near Aravind Eye Hospital, on the Coimbatore Medical College (CMC) to SITRA junction direction.

Inspector of East sub division traffic police C. Ayyarsamy said that as many as 33 accidents were reported at that place in four years and five were killed.

“There were not many accidents on the other side (in front of PSG Arts and Science College) as there was a junction nearby. Pedestrians especially aged patients coming to the eye hospital were hit while crossing the road,” he said.

This was because there was no signal for nearly 2.5 km from the CMC to SITRA junction and it became a preferred unofficial racing track for college goers geared with super bikes, four-wheelers and heavy vehicles as well. Mr. Ayyarsamy said that with the barricades would ensure that vehicles never crossed the stretch at high speeds. This would also give time for pedestrians to cross the road safely.

The barricades have been kept there temporarily and if they served the purpose without affecting traffic they will be kept permanently. However, they will be removed from the road at nights to avoid speeding vehicles from ramming them.
