Nakkubetta Badaga Welfare Association seeks minister berth for Coonoor MLA

In a letter addressed to chief minister J Jayalalithaa, the Nakkubetta Badaga Welfare Association (NBWA) on Wednesday sought to provide a minister berth to the badaga MLA from Coonoor constituency, Shanthi A Ramu, to represent their community in the Nilgiris district. Around 300 Badaga villages are located in and around Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri.

At a meeting of NBWA executive members in Ooty, they also appreciated the CM's initiative of waiver of farmers' loan in cooperative banks. Basically, the badagas are a farming community. In a letter, they requested the CM to grant a minister post to AIADMK MLA Shanthi A Ramu.

"We, the indigenous population of the Nilgiris district, face many issues, including the downward dive of green leaf tea prices and lack of job opportunities in the hill district," said Manjai V Mohan, secretary of NBWA.

"We also do appreciate the new government's move to close 500 Tasmac shops in the state," he added. "We have requested the CM to initiate steps to withdraw police cases against people took part in agitations, demanding closure of Tasmac shops," said Mohan.
