Getting education becomes challenging for physically challenged

Education breaks all the barriers but this is not true in the case of the differently abled persons who have many dreams to accomplish. Many education institutes have failed to create a barrier-free environment as they lack in providing the basic ramp facility to them.

According to the persons with disabilities (equal opportunities , protection of rights and full participation) act of 1995, it is mandatory for all education institutions to provide access to all the facilities to differently abled people. But a lot of educational institutions have been violating this norms. Even the basic amenity like toilets are not accessible to them.

The law states that the ramps should have double handrail with 800 mm wide, with a width of 1800 millimetre, the gradient of 1:12. The elevation has to be 10 mm for every 12 mm. Regular checks are conducted by the welfare department but still there is no improvement in the situation.

This plight of differently abled persons can be cleared by taking stringent action on the institutions and conducting regular checks of the construction to make it easily accessible and make the environment user-friendly for them.
