People saying 'No Tomatoes' as prices go sky high

A diet without tomato is a bit difficult to digest. But with the tomato prices going up at the rocket speed people are avoiding tomatoes from the daily menu.

Coimbatore receives its share of tomatoes from Nasik and in past few days, the arrival of this veggie has dropped tremendously. The wholesale rate was Rs.1400 for a 22kg box. The price per kg in Coimbatore's retail market is Rs.80 and Rs.60/kg in the wholesale market. The prices for tomatoes in nearby areas like Tirupur and Salem is Rs.70/kg. Coimbatore usually received 20 loads of tomatoes which have now reduced to 6 boxes.

As the sun is too hot this year the production has fallen very low making the prices go up. The price in Hosur market was Rs.58/kg until yesterday. Hosur market sees nearly 10,000 to 15,000 boxes of 25 kg tomato which have now come down to 4000 boxes. 20 loads of tomatoes a day and it has come down to six loads now. With the increasing temperature not only tomatoes all the vegetables are gradually become costly making people look for an alternative for the veggies.

The price list of vegetables in different areas can be given as Beans Rs.76 to Rs.86 a kg in uzhavar santhais and Rs.100 in the open markets in Salem. The price of brinjal remained at Rs.10 in the uzhavar santhais and Rs.20 in open markets on Tuesday, potato Rs.26 in uzhavar santhais and Rs.30 in open markets, small onion Rs.45 in uzhavar santhais and Rs.50 in open markets; chilli Rs.45 to Rs.50 in santhais and Rs.60 in open markets.

All these prices are expected to drop if monsoons arrive soon.

In order to have vegetables without worrying about your pocket one can opt for terrace gardening by cultivating vegetables required for individual families as it a better  option than going for any alternative.
