This news will give a much-needed relief to the family members of mentally ill people. The city-based organisation Kongunadu Mananala Arrakattalai and Chennai-based Schizophernia Research Foundation will be starting a day care centre for mentally ill people at Vadavalli on Monday. As mentally ill people need to be escorted always this day care centre will be very beneficial the family members as they need not stay back at home to take care of them. The centre will provide free services and the members just need to bring lunch.
The day care centre will be working for 6 hours a day. It can accommodate nearly 40 people and will have 48 beds. This day care centre apart from just caring for the people will also teach them various skills like jewellery making , painting a plate making which will build their self-esteem, give motivation and also help them get jobs. In addition to the above skills the members will be taught language, comprehension, communication and social interacting skills
Dr. Pradeep Damodaran, president of KMA stated that the day care centre will be sponsored by Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) and the centre will have eight staff members including psychologists, counsellors, social workers and skill trainers.
A special employment exchange is planned to set up so that capable people can get some sort of job-based on their talents. And they will be requesting various organisations allot a small percentage of work to such people.
