Residents try to return ID cards, freebies


More than 2000 people from Avinashi and surrounding areas besieged the Tirupur district collectorate on Monday, attempting to return their ration cards, voter IDs and freebies including mixers and fans. They want the state government to implement the Avinashi -Athikadavu drinking water project. However, the district administration officials refused to accept the cards and freebies.

Meanwhile, 14 people from Rural Peoples' Movement entered the eight day of their hunger strike on Monday. Tirupur DRO Murugesh tried to pacify the protesters, assuring them that the government would consider their demands.

"We have been fighting with the government for the last 50 years for implementation of the project. But the government failed to fulfil our demand. Finally our people have taken the issues very seriously and tried to return the government documents including voter IDs, ration cards to the district administration," said GV Ravikumar, organiser of Rural Peoples Movement.

Meanwhile Tirupur district revenue officer Murugesh visited the Avinashi New Bus stand where the 14 people conducting hunger strike. He requested the protestors that their demands would be taken to the government immediately. The protestors planned to intensify their protest in upcoming days.
