More liquor bottles than Water in Singanallur Tank

A tank which is supposed be surrounded by beautiful trees and filled with clean water has been dumped with more than 4000 empty alcohol bottles. The condition of the Singanallur tank is pathetic.

But thanks to the good hearted people of 3 organisations - Volunteers of Animal rescuers, an NGO and sanitary workers of Coimbatore corporation who have joined hands for cleanliness drive at the tank. The cleaning work was carried on from 7.30 am to 3 pm on Sunday at a stretch of 2.5 km around boat house and again the work was started on Monday. The work of removing the remaining bottles is expected to be completed next Sunday said the Director of Animal Rescuers, Vinny R.Peter. The bottles have been sent for recycling.

The bund is patrolled twice by the police but the alcoholics are very smart as they know the patrol timing and flee the place immediately. This alcoholics start strolling the bund as early as 7.30 am. They dispose not only bottles but plastic covers and glasses which is proving dangerous to the lake by polluting it to a major extent. As two wheelers can easily go inside through a passage its increasing the number of people going there mostly college students.

The NGO has strongly taken the issue to the corporation and the Director of Animal Rescuer has asked to make the place a 'Liquor Free Zone' as this 288 acre lake is going to help students learn biodiversity of the lake who are coming to the Urban Nature Interpretation and Education Centre of Coimbatore Corporation that would be functional there with cooperation of the NGO, from the first week of July.

The Police have promised to keep a strong eye on the place and have also asked the residents of the area to stop allowing strangers entering the place.
