Sungam junction to get redesigned

A project worth Rs.4.5 crores has been sanctioned by the Central Government for modifying the roundabout at Sungam Junction. The intersection of all four major roads makes it a clumsier and accident prone junction for commuters. The State Highways Department has designed a new roundabout structure at the junction,  as per the Indian Road Congress standards.

The roundabout will have a bigger circumference ensuring seamless vehicle movement. It would be a free left for vehicles passing from Ukkadam bypass to Trichy road.  The Vaalankulam road will be widened by 5 meters and hence encroachments around the area need to be cleared off on priority basis.

The State Highways Department has sought help from the district administration department for clearing encroachments, says R. Sivakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The city police along with Highways Department will carry out inspection at the junction to analyze the ideal way to divert traffic. Public will be intimated about diversions at least 2 days prior to enforcement, says Deputy Commissioner, Traffic. The new roundabout and the road expansion plan have been designed to hold traffic the best way. The work will commence shortly and is expected to be over by 6 months time.
