Dhaka terror attack: Peace rally in Guwahati today

Assam's Muslim intellectuals, activists and academicians have condemned and raised their voice against atrocities inflicted upon minorities in Bangladesh and the recent Dhaka attacks by Islamic militants. They strongly opposed the use of religion for creating terror among minorities, liberals and the common people.

In solidarity with victims of the attacks, the Muslim Nagarik Samaj (MNS), a citizen group, will organise a peace procession at Dighalipukhuri here on Tuesday, in which prominent Muslim citizens and community members will participate.

"The terror unleashed worldwide by the so-called terrorist groups in the name of Islam is not only anti-Islam but also anti-humanity. Through our peace rally, we want to drive home the message that we Muslims in Assam are against any form of violence in the name of religion. We are in total solidarity with the minorities of Bangladesh for the protection of their rights," Mazedur Rahman, social activist and an organiser of Tuesday's peace rally, said. Rahman said over 100 prominent members of the Muslim community are expected to participate in the rally.

"As a minority community in India, we are disturbed by the continuous attacks perpetrated against minorities in Bangladesh. We condemn such acts of terror in the strongest terms. We want to make it clear that those spreading terror in the name of religion are enemies of humanity," president of Char Chapori Sahitya Parishad and writer, Hafiz Ahmed said.

Shahjahan Talukdar, another organiser of the peace rally, said the objective of the event is to reiterate that forces inimical to the existing harmony between different communities in Assam will not be tolerated.

Following the recent Dhaka attack, BSF personnel guarding the India-Bangladesh border in the northeast have been put on high alert. Even in Assam, security forces have been alerted for pre-empting any such terror strikes in the state.
