City based multi-speciality hospital KMCH has performed a domino liver transplant using a liver with a rare genetic disorder called Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP), under the guidance of Dr. S.Vivekandha, Head of the institute.
The domino liver transplant (DLT) has been creating a paradigm difference in resolving the organ shortage and the increasing number of patients on the waiting list for liver transplantation (LT), stated Dr. Nalla G Palanisamy, Chairman of KMCH.
A 36 year old male was examined with the rare condition Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP), a rare genetic disorder. The second patient aged 50 year old was diagnosed with decompensated cryptogenic cirrhosis. The doctors implanted the liver received from a brain dead patient to the FAP disorder patient and in turn his liver (FAP Patient’s) was implanted to the second patient who was diagnosed with Cirrhosis.
Though, the second patient has received a liver with genetic disorder, the condition might not affect his body at least for the next 15 years., doctors said. The complicated procedure has finally saved the lives of two people.
