Training needed for judges, lawyers, police

Senior judges at the Supreme Court, and Madras High Court stressed the need for providing training for all judges, lawyers and, police officers.

Officers in other departments who were connected with court proceedings too should be trained, they said here on Sunday at the inaugural of the Regional Centres of the Tamil Nadu Judicial Academy at Coimbatore and Madurai.

Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that mere knowledge of the law was not enough to run a court.

Referring to persons becoming judges at an young age, he said that they were not familiar with real time happenings in the court under the guidance of senior lawyers, as they had to spend time to prepare of the examination to become a judge.

Mr. Kaul expressed the confidence that judicial academies would help in grooming them.

Lawyers too should be trained in the academy. He said that the academy should be manned by sitting and former judges.Supreme Court judge F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla emphasised the need for training police officers.

He said that there were many instances where an accused went scot free because the police officer lacked knowledge about court proceedings.

Citizens too should be trained in providing evidence in a fool proof manner.

Supreme Court judges C. Nagappan, R.K. Agarwal, and R. Banumathi; and president of the Board of Governors Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, M. Jaichandren; and Madras High Court judges Satish K. Agnihotri, and V. Ramasubramanian spoke. Advocate General of the High Court A.L. Somayaji, and senior judicial officers from other States were present at the occasion.

The Regional Judicial Academy in Coimbatore has been established at a cost of Rs. 13.62 crore. The one at Madurai cost Rs. 14.49.
