The Ministry of Science and Technology in the intent of motivating the Research & development of the Universities has been providing incentive grants through their 'Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence' (PURSE) initiative.
This system was introduced in the year 2008, a panel of experts from the Ministry would evaluate the universities on the basis of H-Index and rank the universities according to their performance in the R&D field.
For the current academic year 2016-17, 30 universities were selected in India by the Ministry of Science and technology, under the PURSE initiative. Bharathiar University has been ranked 14th in the All India-level and 1st in the State of Tamilnadu. Based on the ranks obtained, the funding would vary accordingly, likewise a fund of Rs. 17.25 crores has been allotted to Bharathiar University towards upgradation of research and development.
Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, Prof. A. Ganapathi has confirmed the receipt of letter from the Ministry on the funding and has stated that the funds would be used for upgrading and strengthening the research and technology department for the next four years.
