Above average rainfall in August

Pune: The month of August has been pleasant for the city with 512.8mm rainfall till August 30, a good 77mm more than the average for the season.

On an average, Pune gets rainfall for 10 days in this month. This year, however, the number of rainy days went up to 13. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) official confirmed that August was neutral with respect to any extremities.

"Pune being on the leeward side of Western Ghats is climatologically dry in the month of August. It is also the coolest month in monsoon. This year, the average highest and lowest temperatures remained well within limits," the official said.

The average minimum temperature was around 17 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature was around 22 degrees C.

Monsoon showers gave rise to several health issues.

Although monsoon showers returned to the city last week, the city was mostly dry for the month with only some spells of rainfall. Meanwhile, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated that El Nino conditions are near neutral now.

Conditions now are favourable for developing La Nina. This will not have much impact on the southwest monsoon in India for the time being.
