September 8th of every year is proclaimed as ‘International Literacy Day’ by UNESCO. This year marks the 50th year of the International Literacy Day and UNESCO is celebrating it under the banner “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”.

An awareness rally was conducted by the NSS students of Shri Nehru Vidhyalaya School, RS Puram in view of the World Literary Day. The rally was inaugurated by the Principal of the school. NSS volunteers of the school and teachers participated in the rally. Students were seen dressed like our former President, Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam and held placards reinstating the need for literacy, improving the present literacy levels.

Globally, Government bodies, Educational institutions, social organisations and NGO’s are engaged in celebrating this day to promote literacy as an instrument to empower individuals, communities and societies.
