A 'signature campaign' was flagged off under the guidance of Nithyanandam, Organiser of 'Vellalore Restoration Project' at Arasannan Kovil Mandapam, Vellalore, here today.
Hundreds of volunteers from various NGO Groups, environmentalists and public were present during the initiative launch. The long-pending plea to restore the Vellalore water body has been delayed invariably due to several reasons like encroachments, negligence of authorities along with perverse and heedless attitude of the people residing in the encroached areas.
Hence, the Vellalore restoration project members have decided to run this massive signature campaign involving the residents of Vellalore and adjoining villages, NGO's and members from their organisation and submit their plea to the Tamil Nadu CM, sometime sooner.
In connection with this, Baladhandapani, Executive Committee member of the project launched the 'One lakh signature Campaign' in the presence of other executive committee members Meenakshi Sundaram, Manikandan, Guru Prasad, and many others.
Students and city-based NGO's delivered lectures on the issue and the current water management practices in the city, it's implications on present and future. The history of the Vellalore river was also discussed in detail with stunning facts. Vaagai Pasumai, President P.K. Selvaraj delivered a keynote session on the topic 'The journey of a river'.
The organising committee is confident that the tireless and selfless efforts of hundreds of like-minded people will pay off positively.
