Starting Gandhi Jayanti, BBMP begins to launch intensive cleaning programme across the city. But if citizens will be penalized if found not segregating waste at their doorstep. The new mayor G Padmavathi took up Swachhta as her first task and announced this on Saturday. She was questioned heavily on why the BBMP is afraid of penalizing the contractors and citizens for not segregating waste on Wednesday, immediately after her election to the post.
She said that the intensive cleaning will be done across all zones, ward wise. The programme will continue for some time, said BBMP officials. But offenders will be penalized Rs.100 for the first time, second and third time offenders will be levied a fine of Rs.200 and Rs.500 respectively. Contractors will also be inspected and penalized if the dumping of mixed waste continues, they said.
