Two workers die in Chennai soap oil manufacturing unit blast

Two workers died and another suffered injuries in a blast at a soap oil manufacturing unit in Ambattur Industrial Estate in Chennai on Wednesday night.

Police said the blast occurred at Suraa Silicates Chemical Factory around 11.30pm on Wednesday. Three workers - Murugavel, 35, from Tiruvallur, Ranjan, 24, from Orissa and Vedamuthu, 44, from Avadi - suffered serious burn injuries when potassium silicate spilled over them in the impact of the blast in a pipe. The pipe was connected to a boiler. The reason for the blast was not known.

The injured workers were rushed to Kilpuak Medical College where Murugavel and Rajan died on Thursday morning. Police said they were yet to take a statement from Vedamuthu as he was not in a position to speak.

Owner of the company Lakshman Rao and in-charge Ramesh have been taken in for an inquiry.
