417 law graduates take up Bar Examination

A total of 417 law graduates took up the All India Bar Examination at the Government Law College in Coimbatore, on Sunday. Coimbatore is among the three centres in the State. The other centres in Tamil Nadu are Chennai and Madurai. Ten of the total 427 candidates who were supposed to take up the exam here, did not appear for the examination.

Most of the candidates were from Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Erode, Tirupur, Karur, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. In the three-hour open book examination, the candidates had to answer 100 one mark questions in a coding sheet. As many as 213 candidates took up the examination in Tamil and 204 candidates in English.

Principal of the Law College here and chief superintendent of the examination K.S. Gopalakrishnan said that the examination is conducted by the Bar Council of India for law graduates who have passed out after April 2010 to get recognition to practise as advocates. “It is aimed at increasing the standard of legal education,” he said.

Only on clearing the examination, the lawyers would be eligible to enjoy the various benefits extended to them by the government, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.
