Walls whitewashed, posters removed

Following the imposition of the model code of conduct, the district administration has swung into action to remove hoardings and banners and whitewash walls to cover graffiti.

A release from the district administration said that officials in charge of enforcing the code of conduct had covered 101 wall graffit, 740 other posters and 535 banners on Sunday. On Monday, they had covered 61 wall graffiti, removed 21 posters and 27 banners.

Thus far, the officials had received a complaint on poll code violation. A Flying Squad officer in Kinathukadavu Assembly Constituency, M. Arumugam, had lodged a complaint against K. Mahalingam (45), P. Jeyabal and M. Venkatesh for throwing open a bus shelter in Marichettipatti.

The police sources said that they had registered a case invoking Section 171 (c) and (f) of the Indian Penal Code – interfering with the free exercise of electoral right and punishment for undue influence in an election.

They added that they were also acting on complaints that had been sent directly (online) to Election Commission of India.

Officials in the Coimbatore Corporation said that they had removed all hoardings related to dengue awareness or Swachh Bharat as they had carried images of political party leaders. In all Amma Unavagam too, the Corporation had covered the image of the Chief Minister.

The officials also said that they were whitewashing all walls that had political graffiti.
