Fire in Girgaum building triggers cylinder blast on Diwali night

Mumbai: A fire broke out in a three-storey building in Girgaum on Sunday evening. Fire brigade officials said it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

The fire, which was initially confined to electric installations either on the first or second floor of Mehta Mansion, an old building located on Tribhuvandas Road, spread to the third storey, causing a cylinder blast on the third floor.

The fire brigade, which received a call around 8.30pm, initially deployed four fire engines. However, as the intensity of the blaze increased, more fire engines had to be deployed besides water tankers. Till the time of going to press, eleven fire engines had rushed to the spot, said officials.

Chief fire officer P Rahangdale said that the fire caused the cylinder blast on the uppermost floor.

Officials from the municipality's disaster management cell said that there had been a few residents in the building but most were safely evacuated. "But we are still to ascertain if there are any injuries or casualties," said the official.
