Residents of Kalinga street complain of drainage water getting mixed in drinking water pipelines.

The residents of Kalinga Street of Ward No:25 could no further bear drainage water getting mixed in their drinking water pipelines. A pitch-dark colored liquid in water jars were shown by the residents of Kalinga Street reporting that this is the state of drinking water that they have been receiving for the past six months.

'About six months back, the Corporation dug the roads for laying some drainage pipelines. Since then, we've been facing this issue. Probably, the drainage pipeline has encountered some leakage which enters the drinking water pipes due to the close proximity of pipelines.

We were initially shocked by the color and smell emanating from the water, immediately we escalated the issue to the concerned ward Councillor Jayapal.

In due course, the corporation attended to the issue and said it's all done now. The very next day the issue started to reoccur. We have undergone tremendous issues because of this leakage. Presently, we have to walk to the adjacent roads and fetch water for our daily needs'

Childrens, pregnant and lactating mothers, senior citizens have been undergoing serious health hazard due to this drainage leak in drinking water. We request the officials to attend to the issue on priority and provide us with a permanent solution' said Shanthi, a resident of Kalinga Street.

Speaking to us former Councillor Jayapal, stated that 'The issue stated by the people is true. Presently, we've started laying new drinking water pipelines in the adjacent Pillaiyar street. Shortly, Kalinga street would also be provided with a new drinking water pipeline and that would resolve the issue. The drainage block at ward:24 is the reason behind the leakage, however the issue was apprised to the in-charge of ward:24'

The issue reported here is not somewhere in the suburbs of the city, ward No:25 (Poomarket) is in the centre of the city. It's shocking to know that people living in such prime areas have been undergoing such hazardous sanitation issues for the past six months. As the city is getting ready to transform to 'smart city' such shocking allegations needs to be duly addressed by the concerned officials with immediate effect. The residents also urged that action should also be initiated on the officials who should have addressed the issue before it was brought to the limelight.
