Water sprays, fruits to keep animals cool this summer

Coimbatore: Unlike every year, when animals are fed ice lollies during summer, zoo authorities have decided to go natural this year. "Their diet has been altered to include several fruits such as water melon and musk melon," said an official. Fruits with 70% water content have been added, added the official.

"Every morning, when the cages are cleaned, we spray water on the floor and the animals. The same procedure is repeated in the evenings," said Perumalsamy, joint director, animal husbandry department and in charge of the mini-zoo. He added "We are not feeding them ice creams or other things that is not naturally available for them." Instead officials have planned to provide them with ice-cold water. "When the temperatures become higher, we will give them chilled water, this year," said an official.

Sanitary workers said deer and emus eagerly wait for the water spray. "There are some emus who are aware that we will spray water on them and come running towards the hose pipe. Monkeys, who usually hate bathing, enjoy the water sprays during summer," said a worker. The workers said that the animals are being given abundant water. "We are providing the animals with more drinking water tubs which are filled at least twice a day," said a zoo worker. Groviplex (a vitamin B complex and minerals tablet) is being added to their food. The animals were also de-wormed two months ago so that they remain comfortable during the summer.

"As the breeding has been normal and many animals have given birth, it is quite clear that the animals are not under any stress and are comfortable in their surroundings," said Perumalsamy.
