Cuba's Fidel Castro, former president, dies aged 90

Cuba’s former Prime Minister and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has died at the age of 90, state television reported on Saturday. He was the Prime Minister of the country from 1959 to 1976 and then served as President from 1976 to 2008. Cuban President Raul Castro announced the death of his father on state television.

His supporters praised him as a man who had given Cuba back to the people. But his opponents accused him of brutally suppressing opposition.

In April, Fidel Castro gave a rare speech on the final day of the country's Communist Party congress.

He was responsible for converting Cuba into a one-party socialist state under Communist Party rule.

He acknowledged his advanced age but said Cuban communist concepts were still valid and the Cuban people "will be victorious".

"The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this (Friday) evening,” the president announced on national television.
