Chennai boy sets new national record in solving Rubik’s Cube

Eighteen-year-old Vijay Kishore of SRM University has set a new national record for solving the Rubik's cube, cracking the code in 5.72 seconds, breaking the earlier record of 6.56 seconds.

In a competition held at Montfort School in Tiruchi on Saturday, Kishore indulged in five rounds of speed solving with 98 other participants and grabbed the national record. He is now in a 3rd position in Asia and 13th in the world, according to the World Cube Association.

Kishore has the unique achievement of being the only Indian in the world top 50 with Kesava Kirupa coming in at the 84th position. In Asia, Kishore is again the only Indian in the top 15 with Kirupa at the 17th position.

What started as a common interest with friends in 2012 when he was in the 10th standard, cubing has become a passion for Kishore. Pursuing B Tech at SRM University, he spends most of his free time cubing, getting faster at it each time.

Kishore has also solved the Rubik's cube blindfolded though he doesn't like to talk much about it. "We get time to inspect the cube before we are blindfolded. So I map each colour to its position and can solve it with eyes closed. It takes a lot of time and I prefer working fast," said Kishore.

Kishore plans to pursue his interest in electronic music once he graduates while getting more agile at cracking the cube.
