Following the news of the Chief Minister’s death, public transport and other modes of transport like taxies and auto rickshaws stayed off our roads. This left several people who depend on these forms of transport, stranded on the roads.
In the mean time, the Coimbatore chapter of NGO, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), started a service where they dropped several people to their respective destinations. Numbers that the public could call for a lift, were circulated through various means and the call for help kept pouring in.
This NGO operated taxis and auto rickshaws since 10 pm last night from various points in our city and ensured that people reached their homes safely.
As today, too the various means of transport continue to remain off our roads, this NGO received a call for help. The callers identified themselves as students of the Bharathiar University, who are originally from neighbouring Kerala. They were all set to board a train back home and they conveyed that they have no means of transport to reach the Coimbatore Junction.
As soon as JIH received this call, the students wing of Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) was pressed into action. The volunteers, had the 30 women students picked up from their university campus and dropped them off at the Coimbatore Junction today.
Expressing their heartfelt gratitude to JIH, all the 30 students boarded their trains safely to reach to their hometown.
