Karthigai Deepam, a festival of lights is celebrated in the month of 'karthigai' (December) in South India. People celebrate this illuminating festival by lighting decorative lamps in their homes as a sign of eliminating darkness (evil things) and welcoming happiness and holy things of life to their homes.
The lighting of the 'Mahadeepam' which is an auspicious part of the Deepam thiruvaizha was hosted at the hill-top temple of 'Sri Arunachaleswarar', Tiruvanamalai at 5:00 pm today.
