Vardah uproots over 2.5K trees on defence campuses

Gusty wind of cyclone Vardah, which made a landfall in Chennai on Monday, has wiped a vast track of green cover on the premises of defence and paramilitary establishments in Arakkonam.

The Regional Training Centre of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Thakkolam have lost several hundred trees to the cyclone. The INS Rajali, which is also the home to the Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine Warfare squadron of the Indian Navy, in Arakkonam, has also faced the brunt of the strong winds that passed through Vellore. In fact, Arakkonam is the worst affected area in Vellore district in the cyclone.

Sources in CISF and NDRF, which shares a single campus that spread over 617.09 acres of land, said that around 1,500 trees have been uprooted in their campus. Most of the trees had been planted over 20 years ago.

The wind speeds ranging 90-100 kms per hour gusted up to 110 km/per hour in Arakkonam and surrounding areas. "Since 1 pm on Monday, the wind is very strong and it gusted up to 110 km/hr. It uprooted around 1,500 trees. We have engaged our personnel to remove the trees," said a staff in CISF.

Several trees have been uprooted on the premises of INS Rajali, naval base, in Arakkonam. The authorities have been accessing the level of damage caused by the cyclone Vardah. "Many trees have been uprooted in the campus. Efforts have been taken to restore the situation," said a source in INS Rajali.
