Send new textbooks for printing before January 15: Chief Minister

Revised textbooks will be introduced for the 75,000-odd state board schools in Karnataka from next academic year. On Wednesday, chief minister Siddaramaiah directed the textbook revision committee and minister for primary and secondary education, Tanveer Sait, to send the new books for printing before January 15, 2017.

"The chief minister has said that the books must be sent for printing by January 15. By then we'll finish the final touch ups and proof-reading of all the books which are now on the DTP format," said Baraguru Ramachandrappa, chairman, textbook revision committee.

From the time it was set up in 2015, the committee has been working towards bringing state board textbooks on par with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum. The government decided to roll out the new books from the next academic year, following a number of errors cited in the present ones. However, during the recently held Belagavi session, Sait had said that new books wouldn't roll out in the coming year, though the textbook committee had already completed revising them and was set to submit the copies to the minister. This was due to a miscommunication between the department of public instruction and the textbook committee.

"For the past one year, we have been contacting experts from across fields to get their opinion on various subjects," said Ramachandrappa.
