Karnataka's 2nd IIIT to be set up in Raichur

The announcement by Union human resources development Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday that an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) would be established at Raichur has come as an early Christmas gift for the people of Raichur district. It'll be the second such institute in North Karnataka, after the one in Dharwad.

The ministry decision is seen as a move to placate Raichur district whose residents had launched an agitation for the establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the district but lost out to Dharwad.

Karnataka higher education minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi, who has been lobbying with the Centre to establish an IIIT in Raichur told TOI that he welcomes the decision.

The expert committee set up by the ministry to pick the place for an IIT in Karnataka had visited Raichur, Dharwad and Mysore, all proposed by the Karnataka government.
