Tenants in a fix as more owners demand rent in cash

Property tax collection is expected to rise in the wake of demonetisation with an increasing number of commercial property owners preferring payment of monthly rent from tenants by cheque or online modes and insisting on proper rent agreement.

Tenants of residential properties, on the other hand, say that owners are asking them to pay monthly rent in cash and not through cheque or electronic modes, especially when getting cash is not that easy.

For IT professional Shivaprasad, who lives with his family in a rented three-bedroom house in RT Nagar, paying the monthly rent of Rs 22,000 has become a hassle. "The owner has asked us to pay three months (November, December and January) rent in cash. He has refused payment by cheque or e-wallet and has asked us to pay the money in cash in a week or vacate the house," says Shivaprasad.

Shivaprasad is not the only one facing the problem. Vinay Kumar, who lives with his family in Yelahanka, says, "I pay Rs 11,000 as rent but cannot withdraw more than Rs 2,000 from ATM and Rs 5,000 through cheque. Now, my house owner wants rent in cash."

Most house owners, especially those who run PG accommodations, are reluctant to share their bank account and PAN card details with tenants.

I-T officials say that such cases can be brought to the notice of the commissioner with jurisdiction over the area. "Tenants can also register complaint at the DM's office against owners," said an I-T officer.
